The mission of the International Affairs Program at Lafayette College is to educate students to think globally and consider issues from a variety of perspectives. Therefore, because of its goal to have students attain international knowledge and awareness, the program is committed to fostering respect for different perspectives. The interdisciplinary IA Major helps students appreciate the complex interaction that shapes the relationships between people of different backgrounds. Students enrolled in the program should gain a multifaceted perspective on world issues by achieving proficiency in at least one foreign language, as well as knowledge of several disciplines (including Economics, History, and Political Science). Additionally, all IA students are encouraged to gain experience in other related disciplines.
By understanding other cultures and perspectives, students pursuing an IA Major become more appreciative of their own culture and its perspectives. The IA Program, which strongly encourages its majors to spend at least one semester in a non-English speaking country, prepares all students in the program to meet the challenges of our world’s ever increasing process of globalization.
