Deborah Horan, former journalist, spent eight years covering the Middle East while based in Jerusalem and subsequently covered the war in Iraq, initially from Lebanon and Egypt and then from Baghdad. She covered events in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Iraq, and Iran, mainly for the Houston Chronicle. In 2001, she was awarded a Knight Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan, where she studied the rise of Al-Jazeera television. In 2002, she joined the Chicago Tribune and was assigned to cover Beirut, Cairo, and Iraq in 2003 and 2004, in the early years of the Iraq War. Since 2008, she has been working in Washington, D.C., and currently works for a food policy research institute
